Slumdog movie star (Rubina Ali Qureshi) not really for sale

Father of child actor Rubina Ali Qureshi of Oscar winning 'Slumdog Millionaire' denies media reports that he put his daughter up for sale.

IN the movie that propelled her to international stardom, Slumdog Millionaire child actor Rubina Ali Qureshi is captured by traffickers and sold into slavery.

But it seems the reality of life for India's most famous child actor is even more brutal than the Oscar-winning film she starred in, with a British tabloid claiming to have successfully struck a deal with the nine-year-old's father to sell her to an Arab family for $410,000.

The story dominated headlines across India yesterday after News of the World reporter Mazher Mahmook posed as a wealthy Dubai sheik interested in adopting the child star.

Rubina's father, Rafiq Qureshi, admitted yesterday to having met the undercover reporters but says he did so only because the couple claimed to be big fans and wanted to meet his daughter.

Rubina also denied her father tried to sell her, telling an Indian newspaper: "We had just gone to meet them and though they offered to take me away, my father refused, saying that he couldn't let me stay away from him."
